Books I Read | April 2015

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
3 stars. This was a fun read that draws parallels (at least in my opinion) to the Harry Potter series and the Charlie Bones series. The book was pretty long for being a juvenile read, but overall, it was enjoyable. I’m not sure I will be reading the rest of the series though — at least not right away.

The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
3 stars. I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I thought I would! But it was still a good read. I really identified with the characters (or at least the way the author portrays them) and so was really able to put myself in their shoes. I didn’t care too much for Tess’ storyline. Between infidelity and the fact that her story wasn’t as important to the other two main characters… I could have done without her.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
5 stars. This was a re-read for me. I adore this book. One of the main reasons I love this book is because it makes mental illness look normal. As in, Esther (the main character) is still Esther the whole time just slightly changed. Just like we change because of our circumstances or experiences, except she changed a little more dramatically. I’m not sure if that made sense. But it helps show that mental illness is real and is that person’s reality, whether we understand that or not. It’s fascinating and sad and unique and the writing is beautiful.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
4 stars. At first I had a hard time getting into this book because of the author’s personification of emotion. But once I realized how beautifully written it was, I got past that, and enjoyed it. This is a quick YA read, with a shocking ending. I literally had no idea it was going to end like that, which I think is one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much. (Sidenote: The author’s book The Boyfriend List has been a favorite of mine since I was a teenager. I highly recommend you look it up if you want to read a hilarious and angsty read about high school. It’s a complete 180 from the style that We Were Liars is written in, but still a great read.)

Cinder by Marissa Meyer
3 stars. I had heard great things about this book… Yet, I just didn’t love it. Even giving it 3 stars seems a little high to me. The book eventually picked up in the last third, but for the first 2/3 I was just bored. I will be reading the rest of the series, because I am interested to know how everything ties together and to know more about this dystopian (?) world.

Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe by Max Lucado
3 stars. You can read my full review here.
