LDS Faith and Beliefs | Families and Family Home Evening

Welcome, welcome! My last post was kind of dry and had information overload, but I hope you enjoyed it and learned something about what church looks like for me. So today I want to talk about something we can all relate to, and a program instituted by the church to help stay connected as a family.

You’ve probably already read my post entitled Why Motherhood is Important. If you haven’t, I would love if you clicked over now. Not only is it a post I love, but it introduces you to a core part of who I am and what I believe.

This month marks the 20th anniversary of The Family: A Proclamation to the World which was read by the prophet and president of our church at the time, Gordon B. Hinckley. The Proclamation, in a nutshell, outlines the core Gospel principles and beliefs that we have as members of the LDS church. And I would bet that the majority of my Christian friends believe in most, if not all, of the things that are taught in this statement. Click the link, read it, and let me know what you think!

We believe that the family is ordained of God. We believe that the family is CENTRAL to God’s plan for us. We believe that we are literally sons and daughters of God, and that we can return to live with Him after this life, and that we can continue on in our family relationships after this life is over. And we believe that we need to defend the family right now in a world where the emphasis is all about self, not the family or the whole. You can read more about what we believe about families and happiness here

Way back in 1915, our church instituted a program we call Family Home Evening. Basically, this is an evening set aside once a week, where the family is all together. We may sing songs of praise, pray, have a lesson or talk about certain Gospel subjects, do an activity together, etc. The focus is just that we are together, building our family relationships with each other, and making the Gospel a priority in the family and in our home. Most LDS families hold FHE on Monday evenings, and our church doesn’t schedule any meetings/programs/etc on Mondays to hep accommodate families that do so.

What do you think? Do you already have a day or evening set aside to do things with your family? Would you like to? I think it’s a great program and really helps emphasize the importance of the family, and really creates one way to make sure your spouse and children know that they are important to you. Because they should know that. They should feel loved. Our family should be our number one priority, and by making sure we have family time scheduled, we are making it so.
