Book Reviews, Books I Read

What I Read | August 2015

Phew, what a month of books! I packed seven in, and I enjoyed most all of them! Before we get to my reviews, I want to ask you — do you like how I review? Would you rather me give a plot summary before my review? I finally am linking back to goodreads like I used to, so you can easily access plot and other info on the book, do you like that? Let me know what you think!

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell
4 stars. This book totally redeemed Rainbow Rowell for me. I was someone who hated disliked Eleanor and Park, but I decided to give her another go with this book, and I’m glad I did! I think technically it was a 3.5 star book, but I enjoyed it enough that I rounded up to 4 stars, since I give most books 3.

The Doll Maker by Richard Montanari
3 stars. I can’t even remember how I heard of this book (a fellow blogger, probably) but I picked it up, and holy cow. Creepy. I felt like I was watching an episode of Criminal Minds the whole time I was reading. But that sort of stuff is right up my alley, so I enjoyed it. I didn’t realize before I picked it up that it’s technically part of a series of two detectives, but I still liked it fine. I don’t think you have to read the other books to understand what’s going on.

My Lobotomy by Howard Dully
4 stars. This book was fascinating. It’s a memoir of Howard’s life, which includes a “wicked” step-mother who talked his father into having Howard get a lobotomy when he was 12 years old. Howard never understood why he was treated the way he was, or why his step-mother disliked him so, so as he got older, he started to dig and find out the true story of his past. I think one of my favorite parts of this memoir was the voice. It was simple and straightforward. No flowery language, just exactly as I think Howard would tell the story in real life.

Bonding With Your Child Through Boundaries by June Hunt
4 stars. See full review here.

Dear Daughter by Elizabeth Little
3 stars. This book cracked me up, and was a good mystery to boot! It’s really hovering between 3 and 4 stars for me. It’s not an amazing piece of literature by any means, but it was entertaining for sure! I’d recommend it to anyone in need of a laugh, and those who enjoy mysteries. Just be aware that there is quite a bit of language in the book, so if that’s not your thing, you should probably skip it.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
2 stars. Eh, this book was a disappointment to me. It was your average YA novel, not too much happened and I was kind of bored the whole time. And when something did happen it was at the end, and then you’re left with a cliff-hanger since it’s apparently part of a series (that I won’t be reading). Argh. Also the main character is supposed to be 16 but the way she talked and acted was more like she was 12 or 13 so I couldn’t take her seriously.

Cress by Marissa Meyer
3 stars. Finally this series got exciting! This book was much better than the first two in the series. It’s still not on my list of favorites, but I feel like after reading a million pages it’s finally going somewhere. I mostly am super excited for Winter to come out. The small glance we got at her character in Cress was amazing and I can’t wait to find out more about her.

Have you read any of these? What did you think of them?
