Training for a Triathlon | Introduction

Triathlon

So. I’ve done something kind of crazy. Actually by kind of I mean REALLY crazy. I signed up for a triathlon. WHAT?! I know. Me. A triathlon. It’s insane. So let me tell you the story of how this all came about.

I was scrolling through facebook a couple of weeks ago, and I saw that a friend had posted about an event called TriathaMom. It’s a triathlon that takes place in Utah, and is just for women. It’s a real triathlon, but it’s really low-key, the point is just to do it, and finish, and to do so surrounded by those that support you in your life. While you’re doing the tri, your support team will be enjoying a carnival and making homemade signs for you, as well as cheering you on!

I mulled it over for a week or two, because on the one hand, I really wanted to do it. But on the other, I have only run a 5k once, I haven’t swam for real since I was about 6 years old, and I haven’t ridden a bike longer than about 10 minutes. So. The whole idea of me doing a triathlon is crazy. However, the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do it. I wanted to prove to myself that I can do something that seems impossible and crazy. And this is the year to do it. I’m not pregnant, and I’m not planning on becoming pregnant, so I can train and work out and prepare to do this in August. Who knows when this opportunity will come again?

And so… I signed up. Kyle said we can use some of our tax return money to buy me a bike, and he’ll watch the kids when I train. He’s also done one triathlon, and wants to do another, so we can do some training together.

Am I nervous? HECK YES. But I can do it. I’m going to do it. And I’m planning on blogging about it along the way. Every 4th Thursday I’ll be posting about how my training is going, what I’ve been doing, etc. My actual training might not start for another month or so as I get my bike ordered, get a rec center membership, and wait for the weather to clear up, but I’m planning on at least starting to do some at home work outs to start getting into shape.

Wish me luck! And if you have any tips for me, drop them below!

(Pssst, and hey, if you’re into getting free stuff, you should check out this new site I found! It’s getting ready to launch and right now if you share and have friends sign up to share too, you’ll get points to earn free yoga gear (ie leggings, etc.). It’s free to sign up, all they want is your email address, and then share away! I’d love it if you’d sign up, to help me get some new work out gear as I start to train for my Tri. Thanks!)
