DIY Finger Paint

Let’s talk about messes. I think messes are the #1 clue in a home to know if there are kids in the home or not 😉 Especially toddlers. Oh man, my house is never clean! Between the clutter of toys and books and the stuff that he somehow finds from deep within my cupboards, to the endless food mess that somehow is never contained to just my kitchen, well, my house is rather “lived-in”. Which is fine! But sometimes the mess is enough to make a momma go insane.

That’s where baby wipes come into play. Wipes are probably my best friend these days. I use them for everything. In fact, we keep a container right on the kitchen table, next to our napkin holder, for easy access. I keep them in my car, in my diaper bag, and they’re in pretty much each room of my house, as well! Wipes can be used for pretty much anything.

These days, Abe’s really into coloring and drawing. Which is great as far as learning goes, but not so great for my (already messy) home. I’ve been hesitant about introducing him to paint because, hello, messy! But I decided to bite the bullet, because I knew he’d love it. Plus, with my handy dandy Huggies One and Done wipes from Walmart, I knew clean up would be a breeze. You can find Huggies wipes right there in the personal care aisle at Walmart, next to q-tips and other such items.

After searching for an easy homemade finger paint recipe, I decided to take some aspects of a few different ones I found, and create my own! It was super easy, and Abe loved it! Here’s what you need to make some for your little one(s).

DIY Finger Paint

  1. Mix together 1 cup water, 1.5 tablespoons sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 cup corn starch in a saucepan over medium-low heat until thickened. This should only take 5-10 minutes.
  2. Place a few drops of food coloring in the bottom of muffin tins.
  3. Add the paint mixture and stir in.
  4. Paint away!

It’s really that easy! One reason I love making my own finger paint out of basic baking ingredients is because then I don’t have to worry about what Abe’s ingesting when he inevitably sticks some in his mouth. I would recommend either doing this activity outside, or covering your kitchen table with either a plastic table cloth or piece of butcher paper.
