Start A Blog | Choosing A Blog Name

Start A Blog

So, you’ve decided that you want to start a blog. But just what are you going to name it? The name of your blog is essentially what will represent you and your blog across all social media outlets, so you want it to be something that really describes who you are and what your blog is about. Some people have an idea for a great blog name off the top of their head, and others need time to create one. If you’re the latter, here’s a way you can go about choosing a name.

Brainstorm

Set a timer for 5 minutes, and take that time to write down all the words you can think of that represent you and what you want your blog to portray, and what you want to write about.

Look For A Pattern

When the five minutes is up, take a look at the words, and try to see a pattern. Are the majority motherhood oriented? Or about marriage, DIY, cooking, or fashion and beauty? Or are they just aspects of your life that you want to come across in your blog posts? All of those are great, but look for a few words that really speak to you. (Keep these words close, we’ll be talking about how else to use them in a later post!)

Organize and Create A Name

After you have a handful of words that represent what you want your blog to be about, try to organize them and see if you can put a few of them into a catchy blog name. I would say a good blog name is anywhere between 1-5 words. Some bloggers have names that are longer (and that’s ok!) but you start running into confusion and long social media handles (or hashtags), so in my opinion it’s better to keep it simple. You want something uniquely you.

Google It

Once you have a name or two you like, google them. You want to make sure there aren’t other blogs or shops (especially popular ones) that have the same name as you. I’ve heard of bloggers who didn’t do this, and then realize that there is a blog with the same or similar name already. You don’t want this for a few reasons – 1) you don’t want to take traffic away from that blog, 2) you don’t want to drive traffic to that blog instead of yours, and 3) it will be harder to find a domain name (we’ll talk about that another time). You really want to find a name you love, too, that you’ll be able to grow with. Re-branding and re-naming your blog can be a lengthy, tedious, and sometimes expensive process, so it’s best to avoid that. (Not that it’s bad! It’s a great thing in some cases. You just don’t want to do it too soon after starting a blog.)

So there you have it!

My blog name is not so unique, I know. My Little Sunshines (or variations of it) is actually pretty popular. However, I just knew that’s what I wanted my blog to be named. Truth be told, I didn’t follow my last step either. Luckily there isn’t a popular blog with a similar name, but there could have been!

What is the reason I named my blog My Little Sunshines? First, the imagery of sunshine has always resonated with me. I’m a happy, warm person, and I love the idea of spreading kindness and goodness everywhere I go, like the sun spreads it’s warmth over everything it touches. Second, I started this blog when Abe was a couple of months old, and I sang “You Are My Sunshine” to him a lot (and still do) so that was on my mind, as well. And third, I knew I wanted my blog to be a place where I could share all of my favorites – my sunshines, if you will. Whether it’s about my kids and family, or fashion and beauty products, or my religion, I wanted a place to share all the things that bring sunshine into my life. So, there’s the story behind my name!

I hope you enjoyed this post, and it helped you think of a few different blog names that you can get started with. Again, no matter what you choose, whether you go with just your own given name, or another name, make sure it’s one you love! You’ll be sharing it a lot with people in the future 🙂
