Oh, books, how I love thee. You’ve probably gathered by now that I love books and reading. Like the kind of love that when I was growing up the only punishment my mom found that motivated me to obey was taking away books (which I would then sneak back in my room and read under my covers with a flashlight). Books have been a part of my life since literally before I can remember. I’m excited to share with you 3 books for today’s Blog-tember prompt: one I just read, one I’m currently reading, and one I want to read. Here we go!
Today’s Prompt: 3 Books
One I Just Read:
Then Sings My Soul by Amy K. Sorrells
When Nel Stewart returns home due to the sudden death of her mother, she realizes her beloved father, Jakob, is struggling with dementia. With the reappearance of a high-school sweetheart, deliveries from Ukraine addressed to her, and the discovery of a mysterious, vintage aquamarine gemstone, Nel senses God is pulling her into the past to restore their faith and their futures. Told partially through Jakob’s flashbacks of fleeing genocide-ridden eastern Europe at the turn of the twentieth century, the novel combines elements of mystery, history, faith and romance to reveal how God redeems the broken years … and our future.
I actually just finished this book yesterday afternoon, which is why this post is going up a bit late today. Last year I read How Sweet The Sound by the same author and loved it, so I had to pick this one up, as well! It’s been sitting on my nightstand for a while, so I was glad when I had the chance to finally read it. It was another wonderful book. Amy has a great writing style, that really draws you in and helps you connect with the characters, not to mention she writes about themes such as loss, redemption, regret, heartache, grace, and family ties… All the things that we experience as human beings. Her books are just so real. If you are looking for real novel about forgiveness and finding God, pick this up. You won’t be disappointed.
One I’m Currently Reading:
Fervent by Priscilla Shirer
You have an enemy . . . and he’s dead set on destroying all you hold dear and keeping you from experiencing abundant life in Christ. What’s more, his approach to disrupting your life and discrediting your faith isn’t general or generic, not a one-size-fits-all. It’s specific. Personalized. Targeted. So this book is your chance to strike back. With prayer. With a weapon that really works. Each chapter will guide you in crafting prayer strategies that hit the enemy where it hurts, letting him know you’re on to him and that you won’t back down. Because with every new strategy you build, you’re turning the fiercest battles of life into precise strikes against him and his handiwork, each one infused with the power of God’s Spirit.
I actually picked this book up at the beginning of the year, but haven’t found the right time to read it until now. I’m only a few chapters in, but I am loving it. I’ve talked before about how I am a huge believer in prayer. Prayer has 100% changed my life, and I love reading books about prayer and how I can further utilize it to help me in my daily battles. (You can read a review of another one of my favorite books about prayer here.) I know I’m going to love this book, and even though I’m not finished with it, I’m recommending it to all of you, my girl friends, right now.
One I Want to Read:
The Tea Planter’s Wife by Dinah Jefferies
Nineteen-year-old Gwendolyn Hooper is newly married to a rich and charming widower, eager to join him on his tea plantation, determined to be the perfect wife and mother. But life in Ceylon is not what Gwen expected. The plantation workers are resentful, the neighbours treacherous. And there are clues to the past – a dusty trunk of dresses, an overgrown gravestone in the grounds – that her husband refuses to discuss. Just as Gwen finds her feet, disaster strikes. She faces a terrible choice, hiding the truth from almost everyone, but a secret this big can’t stay buried forever.
I just ordered this book from Blogging For Books, and am excited for it to get here so I can start reading it! The premise sounds interesting, similar(ish) to Jane Eyre (one of my very favorite books), so I hope it lives up to my expectations! Has anyone read this one? What did you think?
I hope you enjoyed this little peek into my bookshelf! I love reading, and I love sharing what I’m reading with you! Do you have any recommendations for me? Drop them below. Let’s talk about books, baby 😉 I’m taking a few days off Blog-tember for other posts, but I’ll be back on Thursday sharing my craziest adventure.
