Being a mom can be tiring and draining. We put all our efforts and energies into making sure our family is fed, dressed, and safe, and that our home is in some semblance of order. We may volunteer our time with the school, the PTA, our church, and/or our children’s sports teams. Some of us may work, others of us may have a child with special needs. No matter what way you slice it, and no matter what side of the fence you’re on, I’m betting that you are tired and often feel drained.
I’ve learned in my 2 years as a mom, and really in my 27 years as a human being, that sometimes the best thing you can do for those around you that are counting on you, is to take some time for yourself. No one is going to enjoy being around a frazzled, cranky, tired woman. But a woman who understands how to take a step back and breathe has truly found some balance in life, not to mention is a more enjoyable person to be around.
Today I’m sharing 5 ways to reset and recharge during the day. I hope they help you take some time for yourself and become the woman you’d like to be, even in the midst of this craziness called life.
Utilize your children’s naptime as “your time”.
I’ve heard this from more than one mom, and I love it. During the day-time hours, when our kids are awake, we’re generally devoting our energy to serving them. Whether it’s making meals, cleaning up meals, driving them to various activities, grocery shopping, playing with them, etc., you’re constantly focused on your children and your household. So when your children go down for naps (if they still do) don’t use that time to do even more household duties. Take a few minutes to yourself. Take the time to sit down and breathe, and reset your mind. Use that time to unwind and relax. Write in your journal, shower, or do any of the other things I’m going to mention below. Just take the time for yourself.
Take a cat-nap.
You probably don’t want to (or have the ability to) do this every day, but if you are feeling extra tired, and have a few minutes, lay down and set a timer for 20 minutes. You’ll get a little extra boost to finish out the rest of the day. And that’s a win-win for everyone.
Sit down and read a book for 15 minutes.
I’m a huge lover of reading. I try to find time to read every day even if it’s just for a few minutes. My book of choice is usually some sort of fiction, and it’s so nice to take that time to zone out my own to-do list and problems, and to get lost in a fictional world instead. By taking a few minutes to do this, I find that I am often ready to tackle my own reality, once I’m done reading.
Step outside and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.
Sometimes when we have young children (or even if we’re working in an office building all day) we don’t get the chance to set foot outside during normal day-time hours. But getting outside is so important! We need that Vitamin D. Take a few minutes each day, whether it’s while the kids are napping, or when your husband gets home from work, or during your lunch break, to just step outside and be. Feel the warmth of the sun on your face, and breathe in that fresh air. Your senses will be awakened, your mind will be cleared, and you’ll feel calmer and ready to head back inside to finish your day.
Get your favorite drink or treat from your secret stash and simply enjoy the flavor.
This is one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes a mom just needs a special treat, ya know? I love to keep a little stash of my favorite foods so when I need a break I can grab one of them and just relax and savor the moment. I feel so much better if I just take a few minutes to not do anything but sit and sip (or eat).
A favorite drink of mine is Snapple®. Good news for me (and you!) right now 64 ounce Snapple products are on Rollback only at Walmart until 11/30. That makes them $1.50 instead of $1.98, so we are talking about a seriously good deal. You can find them in the drink aisle, by the tea and coffee products.
I hope this little post was helpful to you! Self-care is truly so important, and should be one of the things we put highest priority on during our day, so we don’t become a burned out wreck of a person. Take those 15 minutes for yourself. You (and your family) will thank me later. And as a little bonus to remind you to relax daily, here are a few printables for you!
