Back to school. Le sigh. I used to love this time of year (ok, ok I still do!) – the new school supplies, the crisp autumn air, the feeling that I was on the cusp of something great. I loved school, and the love of back to school carried on (and only enlarged) during my college years. I graduated from college 5 years ago. FIVE! And in 3 short years my own little guy will be marching off to his first day of school. But I digress. What I really want to share with you today are some great brands that make back to school meals so much easier for mommas. Because we all know when our kids go back to school it also means we’re back to homework and soccer practice and football games and dance lessons and piano recitals. All those wonderful things that make our lives even more hectic than they were during the slow(er) summer months.
We all have those days when we finally get home at 6 pm and think, oh crap, what’s for dinner? It was bad enough when we were living on our own, but now we have little hands pulling at our shirt asking us the same question! In for the rescue comes Kahiki frozen Chinese food, and Veetee microwavable rice. Kahiki specializes in it’s tempura chicken items, and the chicken is locally sourced from Ohio (so you know it’s good!). They have a variety of other products, as well. On a busy night, just slap that frozen Chinese food in the oven for about 20 minutes, and in no time you’ll be eating a delicious Chinese food. And of course, you can pair it with Veetee microwavable rice. This stuff is magic because you only have to microwave it for TWO MINUTES (and each container comes with 2 servings). Some of their varieties are vegetarian/vegan, too. So, again, you can’t go wrong with this. (See where you can buy Veetee here.)
Alright, so we’ve covered dinner time. But what about snacks? I often have a hard time with snacks because either 1) I get in a rut and eat the same things over and over, and/or 2) I just eat all the junk food I can find. I try not to buy junk food (chips, candy, etc) because I know I’ll gobble it up in a second, but it’s still all too easy to find those chocolate chips hiding in my pantry for baking, ya feel me? And sometimes I feel like healthy snacks just don’t taste good. But I have found a few snacks that are healthy and delicious. First up, Peeled Snacks Peas Please in White Cheddar. I know, I know, at first I was like ummmmm peas? No, thank you. But I tried them and I LIKED THEM. They’re gluten-free and organic and basically just really good for you.
Then we have Sabra Spreads with Hummus. If you like hummus I would venture that you’ve probably heard of the brand Sabra. Their hummus is delightful, and now they’ve come out with these delicious spreads. I was able to try the Garlic Herb, Honey Mustard, and Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper varieties and I loved them all. The Garlic Herb tasted the most like a traditional hummus, the Honey Mustard tasted like Chick-Fil-A’s honey mustard dip (BLESS YOU SABRA) and the Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper tasted like, well, pepper. They come in convenient squeeze bottles which means you can throw this is a little cooler or lunch box and enjoy with chips or crackers at a game, or you can use them in sandwiches to make them extra flavorful and delicious, because bonus: they have 75% less fat than the leading mayonaise. They taste better and are better for you? Check and check.
One more snack for the healthy (but busy) minded? Popchips. These delicious creations are not fried, not baked, but popped! I’m not even sure what that means, but I know they’re delicious and also have half the fat of fried potato chips. (And they’re gluten-free.) I love me some chips, so I’m glad to find a healthier (but still just as good) option.
Of course, me and my sweet tooth, we saved the best for last – Peanut Butter & Co.’s Chocmeister Chocolately Hazelnut Spreads. If you say you don’t like chocolate and hazelnut spreads you are either lying or crazy. I can eat this stuff straight from the jar with a spoon. And Chocmeister has less sugar and more protein than other brands of hazelnut spread, so I don’t feel bad about it when I do eat it straight from the jar on tough mommy days 🙂 But in relation to easy and healthy meals? I like to spread a bit on a piece of toast for a filling, quick, and tasty breakfast.
I hope you enjoyed learning about some new products and how they can help you in your quest to feed your family quick, easy, and healthy meals and snacks, especially during this busy back to school season. Good luck, mommas!
