Welcome to what I read August 2016! I read a lot of books this month (probably because I had my wisdom teeth out and so did a lot of laying and sitting) but hey, I’m not complaining. I love me some books and I love me some reading 🙂

Harry Potter and The Cursed Child by JK Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany

3 stars. I’m planning on writing a blog post wholly devoted to my thoughts and feelings about this book, so look out for that! But until then, just know this, I enjoyed this book (play) for what it was. It was fun to be reunited with old friends and dive back into the magical world of Harry Potter. Do I have misgivings and questions about it? Sure. But overall, a solid 3 stars.

*The Mother God Made Me To Be by Karen Valentin

3 stars. I really enjoyed this memoir. Karen walks us through her marriage, the birth of her sons, her divorce, and her single motherhood. It was raw and moving and sad and I loved it. She wrote with such honesty, and ended on such a positive note. As the daughter of a single mother, and just as a wife and mother in general, I was touched by her story.

*Successful Moms of the Bible by Katara Washington Patton

3 stars. I enjoyed learning a bit more about mothers in the Bible, and seeing what we can learn from them. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but if you think it sounds interesting, pick it up and give it a try.

*Successful Women of the Bible by Katara Washington Patton

2 stars. The second in the author’s series, I liked this one less than the first.  While I did still enjoy what she is trying to do by delving into the lives of women in the Bible, for some reason that I just can’t put my finger on, it wasn’t for me.

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

4 stars. My sister borrowed this book from me a while ago, and when she brought it back I decided that I wanted to re-read it, so I did. If you haven’t read this, you should. It’s a quick, fast read, along the lines of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, except for a younger audience. It’s a lot of fun.

**Accidentally Me by Kim Karras

***Eleanor by Jason Gurley

5 stars. I don’t give out 5 stars lightly, but what the what, you guys?! This book was magical. I’m not even sure how to review it, except to tell you that it made me feel. It covers family dynamics and grief and loss and is just so well written. And then there are the fantastical elements that usually I would probably hate but that just make the story in this novel. Sometimes you pick up a book, not expecting much, but are blown away. And this is what happened to me with Eleanor. As soon as I finished it I wanted to start it over. It was that good. Please, everyone, pick it up, and read it, and let’s discuss it. Because I truly, truly loved this book and am still thinking about it weeks later.

*The Recovering Spender by Lauren Greutman

4 stars. This book was fabulous and really spoke to my spender-self. Lauren shares the ways she got her family out of $40k of debt in just a few years, and shares tips for spenders to use to stop spending and enter recovery. I enjoyed how down to earth she was, and how relatable she made herself and her story. The only thing I didn’t really love about the book was much she mentioned her blog and financial course. After the first few times it just got kind of annoying to me. Other than that, it was a great read, and I’m excited to put some of her tips to use.
