Almost 4 years ago we moved up to the beautiful Coeur d’Alene, Idaho area. We only lived there for two years, but it will always have a place in our hearts — and who knows, maybe we’ll eventually move back! We love being outdoors (during the warm months) and the CDA area is perfect for that with all of it’s rivers, lakes, and camping areas. Soon after we moved, Kyle and I decided to buy some kayaks. We found a great deal on a garage sale site that included 2 single kayaks as well as life jackets, and started to spend a lot of time out on the water.
Kayaking along the river in the summer of 2014.
Kayaking is such a great hobby; it’s a good workout and it’s so relaxing, as well. I love getting out on the water and paddling around a big lake. It’s also a lot of fun to float down a river — and of course Kyle loves it when there are some rapids involved 😉 It’s perfect for all ages, because depending on where you go to kayak you can take a slow, leisurely paddle around a river or lake, go destination kayaking, or kayak down some rapids.
Abe’s first kayaking experience at about 15 months old, summer 2015.
Of course, if you’re going kayaking, you’re going to want to make sure to take along some essentials with you! This list won’t include all the things you might want to take with you – that will probably depend on where you’re going or what kind of kayaking you’re planning to do. But it will include the bare essentials that you’ll want to be sure to take with you on your kayaking adventure!
Sunscreen.
Any time you’re going to be spending time outside (especially near water!) you want to make sure you are wearing sunscreen. We love to take along Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen. Blue Lizard® provides all the coverage you need you need to keep you and your family safe from the sun, and they have a unique zinc oxide formulation. It’s a brand that has been dermatologist recommended for over 15 years, and is trusted by pediatricians and moms! Plus kids love it because of their Patented Smart Bottle™ technology – the bottle changes color when exposed to harmful UV sunlight. All of their products are great, but I like the Sensitive Sunscreen the best, as it’s perfect for both children and adults! Plus it’s paraben-free and fragrance-free!
Life jackets.
Of course! Don’t ever get out on the water without a life jacket!
Water and snacks.
If you’re kayaking, I’m guessing it’s going to be 1) a warm day and 2) a fairly long activity, so you want to make sure you stay hydrated and fed! You should always have a water bottle with you, and granola bars are always quick and easy snacks, but you can bring whatever snacks you might enjoy. Sometimes we like to pack a picnic lunch when we go kayaking – if we’re planning on just paddling around a smaller area.
Water proof box.
This isn’t an essential if you’re just paddling around a little area and/or have friends hanging out on the land, but when Kyle goes solo kayaking, he takes his little water proof box, to keep his keys, wallet, and phone in, and then places it in the hatch on the back of the kayak. It gives him peace of mind to know his items won’t get wet, and it gives me peace of mind knowing he can get a hold of me and/or has his identification on him – just in case!
Kayaking with my sister (pregnant with Eliza!) in the summer of 2015.
You can pick up all of these essentials at Walmart, because Walmart is the master of everything 😉 You’ll find Blue Lizard® sunscreen in the seasonal sunscreen display, and right now there is an amazing Ibotta offer to get $4.00 off! So get to it, and have fun kayaking!
